POCATELLO - George J. Donnigan, 81, of 2724 South Powerline Road, Nampa, passed away September 3, 2003 at the Veterans Home in Pocatello from complications brought on by stroke-related illness.
Born August 31, 1922 in St. Louis, MO, he was the only child of the late Matthew G. and Genevieve Harris Donnigan.Educated in St. Louis, he attended Roosevelt High School, Rubicam Business College, Washington University, St. Louis University and Kenrick Theological Seminary.He was employed by Missouri Pacific Railroad prior to military service; he enlisted in the 725th Railway Operating Battalion, and after six months service in India, transferred to Inspector General's Department, China-Burma-India Theater, New Delhi, attaining rank of Master Sergeant.After 26 months overseas and honorable discharge, he was awarded the Bronze Star and Good Conduct Medal.He then returned to Missouri Pacific Railroad in St. Louis.In 1947 he commenced theological studies for the Roman Catholic priesthood, working at the railroad between semesters.He discontinued these studies in 1953 and with his eyes on the west, applied with Union Pacific Railroad, moving to Pocatello.He worked in various clerical positions in Pocatello, Salt Lake City, Portland and Nampa, where he retired.He served as chairman of the board of directors, Pocatello Railroad Employees Federal Credit Union and served in the capacity of recording secretary for Union Pacific Old Timers Clubs for 30 years.
