    Serving as the keynote speaker, the Executive Director of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Mr. Ben T. Donnie challenged the participants to get involved with the issues of the environment of Liberia.

    Mr. Donnie also advised the public against wasting harmful materials on the streets and in their respective communities.

    He pointed out that by placing waste materials on the streets could lead to anyone killing themselves or their children.

    The EPA boss warned hotels, restaurants, funeral homes and hospitals that wasting their used materials around their business centers is detrimental for their businesses as well as those who they serve; not to mention people who live within the immediate vicinities where these operations transpire.

    Mr. Donnie, maintained that the public should monitor and investigate funeral homes and hospitals on a daily basis, as they carry out their dumping of waste materials.

    According to the head of the EPA, Ben Donnie, his team reported certain level of pollution in the Farmington River and said there was also air pollution in the Firestone area.

    Mr. Donnie told journalists that the air in the Firestone area contains the smell of ammonia which he said is dangerous to the eyes.

    The EPA boss was however mindful of the choice of words when he said "We will still have to do some investigative testing of the water and invite the management of Firestone here to discuss the issue".

    He pointed out that there was no need to be hasty about the investigation, stating that the problem has been in the area for over thirty years now.

    Donnie indicated that Firestone is an international partner of government and, "we will make sure we do proper verification investigation to be sure of what is exactly happening in the area".

    Resident in the Firestone Plantation area have been complaining of pollution of the air and water in the area and asked the EPA to do an investigation to stop their environmental degradation.

    Some residents of the area are demanding damages for the destruction of their environment by Firestone.Some of them indicated that some of the illnesses in the area could be the result of the pollution caused by the rubber company.

    Donnie also said that further test will require borrowing some equipment from other institution in the country to have a correct idea of what is taking place in the area.

    Firestone was established in Liberia in 1926.

    Speaking at the Mittal Steel first hearing before the Senate Committee on Lands, Mines, Energy, Natural resources and environmental on Wednesday, the Executive Director of EPA Ben Donnie maintained that until Mittal Steel gets the requisite environmental management control certificates, mining operations at the company will be vehemently opposed despite any passage of the agreement by the senate.

    "EPA standards and guidelines have been presented to the management of Mittal Steel and it is our hope that a realistic importance will be attached as it is required to submit to the EPA its environmental management plan in order to obtained absolute guarantee from both sides", EPA Boss asserted.

    He said although copy of the mineral development agreement has not been issued the EPA for review, significant priority will be given to the people and the impact ore extraction will be to the environment.
