A graduate of Edinburgh Medical School, Professor Peter Donnelly joined the Bute Medical School at the University of St Andrews as Professor of Public Health Medicine in September 2008.
His principal research interests are in violence reduction and in working with politicians and policy makers on reducing health inequalities.
In his previous role with the Scottish Government as Deputy Chief Medical Officer (2004-2008) he led the Public Health Professionals Group which was responsible for providing cross government professional advice and leadership in the fields of health protection and health improvement.
Areas of activity included; improving national emergency preparedness and providing policy input into areas such as tobacco control, alcohol misuse, health inequalities, violence reduction and sexual health.
He also led for the health directorates on international development issues, health and matters with the Ministry of Defence.
He had previously served Lothian Health as Director of Public Health & Health Policy (2000-2004).
In addition, since 2002 he has held an honorary Chair in Public Health at the University of Edinburgh.
Before returning to Edinburgh he was Director of Public Health for four years with Iechyd Morgannwg Health in Swansea.
Prior to that he spent four years as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Wales College of Medicine in Cardiff.
He has also worked in a variety of clinical medical specialities.
Throughout this time in service and policy appointments, Professor Donnelly remained academically active, and his doctoral thesis was on the topic of CPR training.
He has a longstanding interest in health services management and completed the programme for management development at Harvard Postgraduate School of Business Administration in 1994.
He continues to chair national steering groups on clinical leadership and Public Health training.
He has published widely on Resuscitation, Public Health and related matters and serves on the editorial board of Public Health and Public Health Medicine.
Professor Donnelly is a past Vice-President of the UK Faculty of Public Health and past President of the UK Association of Directors of Public Health.
He has served on many national working groups and given evidence to Parliamentary Committees in Scotland and England as well as to the Welsh Assembly.
He has served on the steering committee of the Reforming States Group, a bipartisan North American Organisation of senior politicians and policy makers, dedicated to improving access to healthcare and enhancing health outcomes in North America.
This is a unique distinction for a European citizen.
He also works extensively with the World Health Organisation on issues including obesity, health inequalities and violence reduction.
