The Lake Huron Centre for Coastal Conservation's coastal resource manager Patrick Donnelly attended the event and shared success stories related to beach management, educational efforts and awareness programs related to climate change.

One of the priority areas for the Coastal Centre is currently the control and management of Common Reed Grass, also known as Phragmities, which is an invasive plant taking over many shoreline areas. "Any effort being made from both the provincial and federal governments to recognize environmental issues on Lake Huron is a positive step," Donnelly said.

They fear this is the tip of the iceberg," said Pat Donnelly, the city's urban watershed manager.

Two forces are driving the city's proposal, he said:

    * To promote city tap water as safe and a bargain compared to the bottled variety.

    * To protect the environment by minimizing the use of bottled water that must be trucked to London and too often ends up in the landfill.

"Certainly, tap water has a much smaller environmental footprint," Donnelly said.

About 40 million single-use beverage bottles are sold in London each year, but only 20 million are recycled city officials say.

The production of bottled water creates up to 150 times as much greenhouse gas as tap water, officials add.

Plans to phase out bottled water sales won't leave Londoners high and dry, Donnelly said -- sales will only be eliminated once there's a supply of tap water at city sites.

Patrick Donnelly, an urban watershed program manager for the city, explains some of the conditions in place and underway through the technical committee and the ministry.

"Nothing that we are doing will impact the fish ladder consideration.Conditions were attached, a lot of it had to do with fish monitoring. The baseline study we are doing now will help to determine the dates the dam opens and closes. In the past, it's been May to October. The (provincial) ministry of natural resources and the (federal) ministry of fisheries and oceans dictates what you can do in regards to water passage," Mr. Donnelly says.
