The last six significant projects that Ernest has worked on are a RAAF training school at Wagga Wagga and five major projects in the ACT: the Defence Signals Directorate Building, the Customs Computer Centre, the Taxation Computer Centre, the ACTEW Corporation's redevelopment at Fyshwick and the R G Casey Building.

Ernest has also carried out research on solar energy systems and the performance of building services.His doctorate is in predicting the energy use of mechanical building services.He has written a number of papers on building mechanical services.

Ernest has been involved with the design of energy efficient buildings and energy auditing for most of his professional life.He has progressively become more involved in the area of energy use in buildings.In the past few years he has carried out nine major energy audits and numerous smaller energy audits of Canberra buildings.He has also been involved in the design and installation of services work to improve the energy efficiency of the buildings audited.

In addition to carrying out energy auditing of existing buildings, Ernest also evaluates services at the design stage for energy efficiency and cost effectiveness.The Suva Chancery, Fiji, and the refurbishment of the West Block building, Canberra, are two such recent projects.

He has highly developed skills in the computer simulation of building energy systems.His competencies in this field include BUNYIP, ESP-II and DOE-2E (simulation of larger buildings including air conditioning plant and daylighting), SUNBEAR (simulation of active solar heating for service hot water, space heating and pool heating), THERM-2 (two-dimensional heat flow analysis for building components and appliances) and NatHERS (housing thermal/energy simulation and rating software).
