Tribute quilters include, from left, Pam Hoard, Ellen Donnelly, and Wendy Johnson.
    ...
Mrs. Hoard's mother, 84-year-old Ellen Donnelly of Maumee, who served as team leader for the New York State Courts memorial quilt, will make the first presentation during the dedication ceremony in New York City's Marriott Financial Center.

"When I present the quilt, I hope someone has a case of Kleenex. There's going to be a lot of tears, that's for sure," said Mrs. Donnelly, a thimble collec-tor who has been quilting since age 7.
    ...
"It's been hard, looking into their faces as we've sewn," said Mrs. Donnelly, referring to photographs of the trio."Not an hour goes by that I do not think of this - of them."

At the top of the quilt are the words "All Gave Some; Some Gave All."

As a special tribute, the "courthouse steps" pattern locks in the four corners of the quilt's design."It's an old, old quilting pattern," said Mrs. Donnelly, who devoted 26 hours - and 175 yards of white thread - to hand-quilting the gold, red, and blue fabric."The courthouse steps depicts where the men worked."

An additional 56 hours of stitching went into the labor-intensive project to make the quilt that easily could be called a blanket of love.Mrs. Donnelly tucked her slender needle one last time into the fabric on Aug. 16 at 6:30 p.m., completing the personal gift to the memory of the three men.

Although she has some vision problems, Mrs. Donnelly uses needles threaded by her daughters and can skillfully "stitch in the ditch."
    ...
It hasn't yet been determined where the quilt of court officers made by Mrs. Donnelly and her daughters will be displayed.
