Edwin Donnelly and Jean-Francois Geschwind have been named as the 2001 ARRS Scholars.
...
Dr. Donnelly is currently an instructor in the department of radiology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, TN.His interest lies in a new imaging technique: phase contrast imaging. This new technique ,has the potential to detect tumors or tumor invasion that are far too small to be detected with ultrasound,, he says.
,My initial work with phase contrast imaging made it clear that my clinical training has not sufficiently prepared me for the challenges of this type of research,, Dr. Donnelly says.As such, he is working toward his PhD in biomedical engineering.
Part of the award will help pay for his tuition. He also plans to work on developing a prototype phase-contrast breast imaging system.Once the system is developed he will compare diffraction to absorption images, then ultimately develop a system to image the human breast.
