In Bucks County, prisoners have at least two deputies at their side at all times and are not uncuffed until after they're seated in the courtroom, said county Sheriff Edward "Duke" Donnelly.
If there's even a hint of trouble -either from the defendant or others at the trial - more deputies are dispatched quickly to the courtroom, Donnelly said. It's not unusual for there to be six or more deputies stationed around a courtroom, especially when the verdict is read or at sentencing.
"You have to be aware of your surroundings at all time," he said.

Donnelly gathered his staff and discussed the shooting Monday. While most policies will remain the same, he said he's taking a closer look at all the deputies' gun holsters to make sure that worn leather doesn't pose a safety hazard.
The sheriff said the Atlanta carnage is a wakeup call to everyone in law enforcement.
"We have not had to handle anything like that, so people tend to get lax," he said.
