While Dole has never held political office before, he's not a newcomer to elections and politics. In 2001, he ran for council's 2nd Ward seat as an independent, losing to incumbent Katie McGlynn, who still holds the position.Dole's also been heavily involved - mostly through volunteering - with the Washington County Republican party and the Marietta Traffic Commission.
Initially, Dole had decided not to run for election this year, but when Joe Stacy, 66, of 7091/2 Front St., dropped out of the race in June due to his wife's death, he was asked to fill in.
Now the 26-year-old has an agenda full of ideas and changes for City Council, though most fall under two categories, which he called "the culture of decision-making on council" and "committing council to fiscal responsibility."
"Council needs business people to make business decisions for Marietta 30 years down the road rather than tomorrow," Dole, the current quality manager at Marietta Industrial Enterprises, of 17943 State Route 7, said.

Dole said council members too often respond to crisises as they happen, instead of planning for them.Dole suggested council should set long-term goals, or use the Development Advisory Board's comprehensive plan, and then set short-term goals designed to accomplish the long-range vision.
Dole also believes fiscal responsibility interplays with this concept and one example he points to is the city's fire department. While council has planned for the lack of firefighters
in the city, Dole points to the lack of planning for an additional fire station near the city's fastest growing area: Ohio 7 near Wal-Mart and Lowe's Home Improvement.
As far as the 3rd Ward goes, Dole said the top issues seem to be quality of life issues: greenspace, recreation, rental housing inspections and pedestrian safety.
