Mini-tours often end up big failures - [Cached Version]
Published on: 1/16/2004    Last Visited: 8/18/2004

Kyle Dobbs of Tequesta calls himself "the king of horror stories" about mini-tours.

"I'd have to say I've lost more money than I've won over the past two, three years," Dobbs said.

Dobbs, 29, said he was owed money by the Trans-Act Mortgage Tour when it folded last year. After being told several times that "the check is in the mail," he said, he went to the Trans-Act Mortgage offices in Coral Springs.

"I stood there in their office until they closed and I refused to leave," Dobbs said."I called my dad and I told him to call our family lawyer and that we might have to call the police because I'm not leaving without a check.

"They tried calling security on me and everything else because I wouldn't leave."

Finally, "about 9 o'clock that night," Dobbs said, he was issued a check.
    ...
Dobbs used to play the TearDrop Tour, which went out of business in 2000.While playing at Stone Mountain, Ga., "right in the middle of the tournament they gave us a letter saying that they're filing bankruptcy and the tournament's over," he said."At that time I was third, and I was leading the (season) bonus pool, which is $30,000."

Dobbs considered playing this year on Avramidis' Maverick Tour, which was making its first inroads into South Florida. He was tempted by "guaranteed" $100,000 purses, a pay-as-you play option and fewer players to compete against than on the Golden Bear Tour.

But his previous experiences made him wary, so he called Avramidis.

For about two hours, Dobbs said, "I just grilled him.He goes, 'Kyle, you are the absolute worst.' I go, 'Well, I've had the worst happen to me, and with your answers I'm not really sure if I can play this tour because you have such a lackadaisical approach, let alone you don't even have a schedule together.'"

Dobbs chose to stick with the Golden Bear Tour. Now, with one victory and a fourth-place spot on the money list, he's happy -- and relieved.

"I don't think I could have handled it if I lost any more money," he said.
