David Dixon shows us his fun side for spring/summer 2008, cutting loose on some of the themes that made him a Canadian fashion darling.

The ,Newport' theme means more than just giant sailboat props,it licenses the celebration of the fun, casual elements that the designer might have been tempted to underplay in previous seasons.

Eye popping, fan-shaped geometrical patterns in black and white are Dixon's vision of spring, and he persuades us to it convincingly.Simple, in-line silhouettes are chosen to broadcast this pop playfulness, and if possible, to reign it in.

The black feathered tunic is just as campy, while retaining the elegance that Dixon is known for.A skirt version of this is paired with a sateen bustier and black biker bolero, a classic eveningwear outfit that Dixon is able to infuse with fun.

David Dixon's show at the BMW building in Toronto showed us with a verve that is distinctly David's.

Capri pants of the same colour gave us a blast of effervescence for Fall 2004 before the collection stepped down to a sleekly elegant pose. A military cut Chanel-style suit with bands of bright colour lining the shoulders and the hems doused us with pomp, and from this point forward I suspect that Dixon went period piece on us. There's also something vaguely emblematic in the baby blue little-miss-muffet overcoat. Maybe I didn't see the fastenings, but how the hell do you get into that thing? You could hire Dixon as your personal stylist, of course, but would you have him custom design in these same pastels for the rest of your fall wardrobe?

The silver skirt, capri pants and trench coat flirt with pop futurism for one of Dixon's more fun twists.

Sometimes a piece shines through as the unequivocal voice of a collection; David Dixon presents the wool flannel cropped coat with leather appliqué and Nehru collar, gently unfurling into a cape. The shape of the silhouette really depends where you're standing,

Just one critique on what is possibly David Dixon's greatest collection yet.

The melancholic strains of a string octet welcomed David Dixon's powerful statement of black as a rite of passage, "12:01 midnight. A brand new day."

The simple straight-cut grey cotton dresses with apron-like nappy are shockingly simple, which goes to show that you can have exquisite design delivered in a plain package, of course with Dixon touches here and there.

Europe has its eye on ultra-feminine lines done up in white for the coming balmy months, but Dixon has always been a master of manipulating the degrees of interplay between white and its alter ego, black.
    ...
A great tradition would have been lost to the fashion reels of yore had Dixon not finished things up with black evening-wear, ruffling feathers on the runway as well as off. The skirts, with their billowing volume, are made for dancing. This goes to show that no matter how muted or serious a collection David Dixon devises, there's always room to let go.

One of Canada's most respected designers brings romantic dreaminess to the nation's Spring 2005 line-up, done in classic lines that fans of David Dixon have fallen in love with long ago.

A beige dinner jacket is dappled with faint shimmering print, and worn over strapped dresses to jazz up serene sophistication with verve, and an alternative is presented in jardiniere prints with jacquard inlay. The delicate cappuccino embroidered silk dress tells a whole other story-a more personal one that is echoed in nearly every piece of the well-balanced collection.

Dixon stays true to form in many ways, and the most obvious example of this is his commitment to playing referee between black and white-okay, sometimes he'll let cream and charcoal step into the ring, but the point is clear. Contrast is his middle name.
    ...
Not only does Dixon use Capri pants whenever and with whatever top he can ( I cite an exquisite pair in muted plum), but his cartoonish geo-floral prints are done in the inexplicably hot shades of ochre and brown that is currently making the 1970's a chromatically cool decade. The spaghetti straps also serve to keep some of the outfits in sizzle territory.

As usual, David Dixon is clearly in his element when he's inventing.
