Charlotte Counselors: APA Study "RidiculousÓ - [Cached Version]
Published on: 8/6/1999    Last Visited: 8/11/2000

I do not even know how to respond to a statement as ridiculous as that, said David Dixon, director of Rapha Carolina, a Christian inpatient psychiatric program located at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The report, titled A Meta-Analytic Examination of Assumed Properties of Child Sexual Abuse Using College Samples, uses data from 59 studies on how young adults cope with child sexual abuse. The study claims that up to 37 percent of men and 11 percent of women who were sexually abused as children reported positive childhood sexual experiences with an adult.

    ...
Dixon said the Christian counseling community is trying to develop a voice through professional organizations like the American Association of Christian Counselors (AACC).But he believes it needs to go farther to include licensure and certification processes that reflect the Christian perspective.Licensure for counselors is currently controlled by the state, with a national licensure also available.

Dixon said he doubts the majority of the APA supports the study's position, but it is unfortunate that they would print it and appear to support it.

A spokesperson for the APA said that publication of an article in the Psychological Bulletin does not necessarily imply endorsement by the APA.

However, critics note that in 1996 the APA moved to reclassify all sexual deviances to allow for ego-syntonic sexual deviants Ñ people whose deviant sexual behavior causes them no guilt. In other words, sexual deviancy Ñ such as exhibitionism, voyeurism, and pedophilia Ñ is a problem only if the person exhibiting the behaviors feels guilty about what they be doing.

According to the NARTH critique, If psychology indeed recognizes consensual pedophilia as harmless, then civil law and social norms will be under pressure to follow the lead of social science as indeed they did on the issue of homosexuality..
