"If we are going to effectively teach, we need more time," Principal Al Dilley said Friday.

He said at least one full hour is needed for the new math program and 90 minutes are needed to adequately teach early literacy. The extra time will improve students' progress, he said.

"Taxpayers are paying a lot for us to educate their children," Dilley said."This will allow us to utilize the time we've been given in a better way."

One way the school has eliminated a lot of down time, is by changing the bus routes. In the past buses made two trips to the school to drop off students. While waiting for the second bus run, students at school would just be hanging around, Dilley said.

By adding an additional bus route, all students will be dropped off at the same time. The routes and schedules are still being worked out with First Student Transportation Company and will be published soon, Dilley said.

Dave Cobb joins Dilley this year as part of the new administrative team in the role of assistant principal.

The afternoons, about once a month, will be used for staff professional development, Dilley said.He said this time is crucial in order to keep Lyndon Town School moving forward.

LYNDON VT - Longtime Lyndon teacher Alfred "Al" Dilley has been named the new principal at the Lyndon Town School.

The Lyndon Town School Board announced Wednesday that Dilley will take the position starting July 1, 2003.

Dilley has taught in the district since 1980, and is currently the assistant principal at LTS.

As principal, Dilley said, he wants to build a good relationship between the community, staff and school board. There has been a lack of community participation at the school, Dilley said Wednesday, and he would like to see that change.

"We have a great staff and a great facility," he said."But we can't do it alone.Without parental involvement we're lost."

Dilley said he understands it is hard with both parents working and some parents holding two jobs.Still, he would like to see more parents in the classroom, on committees and taking part in school activities.

Another area that concerns him is curriculum. He said he would like LTS to get in line with state standards and improve test scores.

Dilley moved to Lyndon in 1970 after his discharge from the U.S. Navy.He holds a bachelor's degree from Lyndon State College and a master's in education from the University of Vermont.Prior to joining the Lyndon faculty he held positions in the Coventry School as teacher and teaching principal.

In announcing the appointment, Susan Mills, chairwoman of the school board, said Dilley has a proven commitment to the school which is something the board has been looking for.
