Carol Diehl , Director of Program Services in Shawnee County , West Virginia , says she has been amazed by the positive response the patch has received and the attention it has drawn from Girl Scout troops and media outlets across the country.Diehl believes troops in other states will soon offer the awareness patch as well.
To earn the patch , girls must invite an advocate from a local domestic violence program to come speak to their troop about domestic violence , and learn what to do if someone they know is being abused.Girls must complete several other activities to be eligible for the patch , such as learning about domestic violence laws in their state ; developing a safety plan for themselves in case they face a violent situation ; or completing a service project that will benefit victims of domestic violence or a local shelter.
The Domestic Violence Awareness Patch Program was developed by the girls of troop 47 , Keyser , West Virginia , and Leader Linda Bratcher , with the assistance of the Mineral County Domestic Violence Task Force. For more information about the new patch , contact the Shawnee Girl Scout Council via email ( shawnee@intrepid.com ) or call : 304/263-8833.
