Rusty Reeves pitched for 1/3 innings. The Whirlwinds ended the season with a 14-6 record."I think we made a lot of improvements from the beginning of the year,"Diehl said.

It ended up being, I felt like, a successful year."Archie is graduating four seniors this year, Chris Engelhardt, Dallas Owens, Anthony Ammerman and Cory Young and Diehl hopes that the team will pretty much stay the same next season."We have basically the core of our team coming back," Diehl said.
    ...
"So we will be in pretty good shape there."However, there will be some changes for Archie, since the team will be moving from Class 1 to Class 2 next year."We have the same expectations next year as we did this year," Diehl said.

New Archie head football coach Brad Diehl will lead the Whirlwinds in his first game as head coach Friday night at Liberal.
    ...
Near the end of the 2002-03 school year, Brad Diehl received some news - he would be taking over as head coach of the Archie High School football team.

"I haven't had time to realize it," Diehl said during fall camp."It hasn't sunk in yet.As time goes by and the opening game gets here, then I'll feel pressure."

The opening game is here, as the Whirlwinds travel to Liberal Friday to begin Diehl's first campaign as the head coach.

Diehl is no stranger to Archie athletics. He was the assistant coach for Archie the last several years. He was close with former coach Steve Lawrence and said he was definitely surprised Lawrence wasn't brought back.

"That's one thing that caught me off guard," he said."It's tough. But we're going to keep some of the same stuff and make it easier for the kids."

His players know him and he knows their strengths. So even with a late start, Diehl said he had no problem getting the team ready.

"We've had the season planned, starting in the spring," he said.
    ...
This season, Diehl said he will have his players running about as much as they throw, as he wants to have a 50-50 balance offensively. On defense, he said he wants to run a four-linemen, four-linebacker defense to help against the run.

While these are the plans he's come up with, Friday night will be a big night, as Diehl gets to see these plans in action.

"I get to finally see how my ideas work and see if what I think will work will work," he said.

Archie head coach Brad Diehl said he thought his team had a good performance in the tournament, but said Lone Jack simply out played them.

Diehl credits the loss to problems with shooting and running their offense. He said some girls did not hit a single shot that night and sometimes they rushed to take shots.

However, Tuesday night was a different story when the Lady Whirlwinds traveled to Adrian and won, 74-44.

"We did not have any trouble shooting," Diehl said.

Next up for the Lady Whirlwinds is a visit from undefeated conference rivals Osceola tonight in front of the home crowd.

"They beat us in the conference tournament and we are itching to play them again," Diehl said.
