Abe Diehl, marketing manager at Joseph Machine, sees manufacturers of all sizes and types active in the equipment market, but points specifically to recent activity in the Southeast and Southwest where several large national manufacturers are opening new plants."The price of land and the cost of labor are lower there," he states."The markets are also strong there."As a result, he sees the trend continuing, predicting that regional manufacturers looking to expand will soon join the national manufacturers already opening new facilities in these areas.

"It's a competitive environment and it's producing innovations in equipment that are increasingly diverse," says Diehl.

Joseph's Diehl also sees this innovation working its way into the market. His company began development of that type of saw about four and a half years ago, working with suppliers of extrusion and downstream equipment, and it's been "quite successful."It's a limited market, because it only works for the vertically integrated companies, but for them, "it makes a lot of sense."It is especially useful for those companies with many stock size products, like patio doors. The benefits, he explains, include significant scrap reduction and the fact it can free up space on the factory floor.

Another area where Diehl expects further development is assembly operations.Joseph has entered the arena slowly, working on equipment for attaching hardware for a few manufacturers, and "there's a tremendous amount of interest," he reports.

Diehl sees equipment demand remaining strong for the foreseeable future too, noting that his company soon plans to add capacity with a West Coast facility.
