Stents During Carotid Angioplasty - [Cached Version]

"The carotid angioplasty procedure involves using a catheter to insert a balloon into a narrowed blood vessel and dilate it," said Gurmeet Dhillon, M.D., Assistant Professor of Radiologic Sciences and a neuroradiologist at Allegheny Hahnemann."What we are studying is putting metal stents into the vessels for support to allow them to stay open.

"After balloon angioplasty, there may be irregularities of the vessel lining, and the procedure is frequently associated with persistent narrowing because of the hard plaque which originally produced the narrowing," continued Dr. Dhillon.

"One of the chief investigators spear- heading this study is Dr. Fong Tsai," said Dr. Dhillon, "who is a pioneer in the field and was one of the first individuals in the nation to perform this procedure."At Allegheny Hahnemann, the carotid angioplasty procedure is performed by a multidisciplinary team, including interventional neuroradiologists and invasive cardiologists.

"Results from stenting and the carotid angioplasty procedure have only been exam- ined over a short period of time," added Dr. Dhillon, "but this study will now allow us to monitor a patient's progress and look at long- term results.
