Mike Derbyshire, Director of Safety and Security, Edmonton Transit System, Canada
As a 25 year decorated senior executive police officer with the Edmonton Police Service (EPS), Mike was seconded to Edmonton Transit (ETS) in March of 2005, tasked with leading the security component of the organization through revolutionary change.During his time at ETS, Mike and his team have built and implemented an intelligence-led, needs based deployment model for security resources, enhanced training for staff and implemented a comprehensive new organizational structure based on accountability and performance management at the individual and team level.Mike retired from the EPS in July of 2006, accepting the challenge of continuing to lead ETS Safety and Security on a full-time basis.Mike has shared this ground breaking approach to public transit security at national Canadian Urban Transit Association conferences, at several regional workshops and with other transit agencies in the U.S. and Australia.Mike graduated with Distinction from Athabasca University with a Bachelor of Professional Arts in Criminal Justice and is also a graduate of the Management Development Program at the University of Alberta.He serves as a member of the Advisory Committee for the Police and Security Program at Grant MacEwan College.
