Obviously, Sept. 11 has made people think about what's important to them, said Mark Derbyshire , director of Carilion Outpatient Behavioral Health Services.Although he hadn't connected nesting instincts to fears raised since the terrorist attacks, Derbyshire said redecorating makes sense if it helps provide the stability many people are seeking.

Nesting, he said, is "finding comfort in a home and something familiar that protects you from the outside world.It's seeking permanence and belonging within a community and within a friendship system."
