To appreciative laughter from the crowd, Denton joked that two of his four grandchildren were unable to attend his announcement event in Conroe because they were attending vacation Bible school at their church.
Denton, 56, said he and his wife were both born and raised in Palestine, and that they started their work careers in Lufkin. The GOP candidate said he worked in the timber industry for 25 years, and, as a result, knows the impact it has on the East Texas economy.
Saying that Texas lawmakers sometimes forget that much of the state's revenue comes from taxpayers and that "money doesn't grow on trees," Denton said it doesn't make much sense to throw more money at public education in light of the fact that 40 percent of the money earmarked for Texas' schools is spent outside the classroom.Instead, Denton said, he would try to see that funds for the public school system are allocated better. He also said he is a firm believer in private property and water rights, as well as the right to bear arms.
The newcomer to state politics said he is a strong supporter of the sanctity of marriage and the sanctity of life.Denton said he will stand firm on his beliefs, even if it costs him votes.
If he is elected, Denton said, he will base his votes on four key principles , his faith in God, his belief in the role that family plays in modern society, his belief in the free enterprise system and his love for East Texas.
"The decision to seek state office is not one I take lightly," Denton said in a press release.

Denton said over the course of his work career, he has always worked hard to maintain the highest standards of "honesty, integrity and fair dealing."He added that he will take that same approach if he is elected to the Texas Senate.
The president of Denton Investment Corporation, the candidate stressed that he is a businessman, not a politician. He said that he knows what it is like when times are tough and "you have to meet a payroll."
"I'm going to tell you like it is," Denton said."I'm a real Republican, and if you don't like real Republicans, you probably won't like me."
