Two Syracuse police detectives spent several days in New York City looking for Dominick "D Murder" Dennard, 21, after learning he is from the Bronx and still has family and friends in a housing project there.They also discovered he bought a bus ticket back to New York City at the Regional Transportation Center in Syracuse the day after the Jan. 20 shooting, Sgt.

Detectives worked with New York City police to track down Dennard's family members and have asked them to persuade Dennard to surrender to police, he said.

Because Dennard has not been arrested on felony charges before, his mug shot was not available, Connellan said.Police were able to obtain his driver's license photo, but the quality of the picture was so bad, the SU photo lab had to use special equipment to sharpen the image, Connellan said.

SU will be printing posters to distribute in the Bronx housing project where Dennard and some family members live, Connellan said.

Dennard walked into an unlocked Campus Hill apartment at 324 Ostrom Ave. and pulled a gun on three young men inside, demanding money.

But Dennard spun him around and pointed the gun at Popov's chest, then pulled the trigger.When the gun didn't fire, Dennard held the gun to Popov's head and fired one shot, killing him.

Although it was initially unclear how Dennard happened to choose that apartment to rob, the two students who lived there told investigators later they had been putting together a large drug deal.Dennard heard about the deal through a friend, Robert D. Adams, who had been in touch with the students, police said.
