"Gianni convinced me that the wine he produces is excellent," says friend Robin Delany, who has just added 150 bottles of Il Vino wine - at about $9 each - to his 800-bottle cellar of much more expensive reds from Bordeaux, California, Australia and Chile.
    ...
Mr. Delany, president and founder of the Delany's Coffee House, a local chain of upscale cafés, became an Il Vino customer last year after sampling the wines for the first time in a comparative tasting arranged on a dare by Mr. Seminari.
    ...
Arriving with a pair of his favourite B.C. wines from his own stash - a $37 blend called Nota Bene and a $35 cabernet sauvignon from acclaimed winery Burrowing Owl - Mr. Delany was ready to silence Mr. Seminari once and for all.
    ...
Mr. Delany ranked three Il Vino wines at the top of the list, with his beloved Nota Bene in fourth and Burrowing Owl in fifth. Two other Il Vino wines and a $50 Louis Latour Burgundy rounded out the bottom of the list.

"I thought I had a reasonably good palate," Mr. Delany says.

CONTROVERSY BREWING - Robin Delany, owner of Delany's Coffee House, is disappointed about his new neighbour.
    ...
"Our family is very upset with the landlord's decision to lease the space to Starbucks in light of the fact that Dundarave is a real thriving community these days," said Robin Delany, owner of Delany's Coffee House."There's a zero vacancy rate in Dundarave; it would have been real easy to lease the space to a host of other tenants."Delany's Coffee House is a family-owned and operated business that has been competing against Starbucks since it opened its first location on Denman Street in 1993.Typically Delany says his coffee shop fairs well against the American corporation, the best example being his store in Edgemont Village, which is situated within blocks of his competitor. However, when Delany heard Dundarave Village Mews Inc. was allowing a Starbucks to move in just a breezeway away from his family store in Dundarave, he was disappointed. "In fairness to the landlord, what they did is legal," he said."But I think it's certainly mean-spirited and not in the community's best interest."Delany fears Starbucks' proximity to his own coffee shop will result in customers sharing tables, chairs and parking spaces. He calls landlord's decision to allow the corporate tenant in the Dundarave building "morally bankrupt," and alleges the move was an easy way to collect rent money."It doesn't matter if the location is successful or not, with Starbucks the rent will always be there," Delany said.

"It works fabulous for the community," said Robin Delany of Delany's Coffee House, in favour of the expanded parking, "because it's worked so well for the three groups: for the parks, for the merchants, for the community.

"It makes a huge impact on our business," Delany added.

Hey, don't know which part of North Van you're in, but Delany's in Edgemont Village (just off of Capilano) is awesome. It has a real community feel to it, not like a chain.Even though it is technically a small chain, the one in Edgemont was only the second location to open and it still really feels like an independent. The owner, Robin Delany, and his wife stop by all the time!

In Deep Cove, try Honey's Doughnuts - good coffee AND homemade fresh doughnuts.A real treat!

While Delany's didn't originate on the North Shore - the first coffee house opened in the West End in 1993 - owner Robin Delany is a North Shore resident, and locations No. 2 and 3 are both on this side of the inlet, so I'll give us credit anyway.

Visit Delany's in Dundarave at 2424 Marine Dr. or Delany's in the Village at 3099 Edgemont Blvd.

It was Little J who I took along for my final excursion, not to a North Shore-born coffee house, but to the granddaddy of them all, Starbucks. At six weeks of age, Little J is not yet a latt‚ lover, but if he hangs out with his mom long enough he's sure to get the bug - and if he inherited my sweet tooth, he'll be just as much a fan of the chain's specialty beverages.

Liquor Fracas - A debate is brewing over a private liquor store on the North Shore - Robin Delaney & MLA Ralph Sultan join Shirai Tobin and callers to discuss the controversy - Rafe Mair Program - CKBD - May 25, 2004, 10:10 AM
    ...
With me now is Robin Delaney who is the president of the Edgemont Village Merchant's Association and the owner of Delaney's Coffee House.
    ...
Let's start with you first, Mr. Delaney. The proposed site for the new liquor store, the Maplewood Pub is already holding a liquor license, and they want to expand to a liquor store. Is that correct?

Robin Delaney: Correct - in a very different community that they are currently in.
    ...
Delaney: Edgemont is known as the hidden jewel of the North Shore.
    ...
Delaney: Most people found out as a result of Mary.
    ...
Delaney: The status is that it appears, right now, that there is a legal loophole that was created either from the district or from the province, and it certainly does appear that it was an administrative technicality at the municipal level that was an oversight. As a result of that, an individual has taken it upon himself to move into a community where he has been told very clearly that he is not welcome, and that it would be inappropriate.
    ...
    Delaney: No.
    ...
Delaney: I think that if it does go ahead - which, hopefully, it won't and the community certainly doesn't want it to - it will be busier than the bookstore.
    ...
Also with us is Robin Delaney, the president of the Edgemont Village Merchant's Association.
    ...
With us is Robin Delaney, president of the Edgemont Village Merchant's Association, and Ralph Sultan, the MLA for the area, the MLA for West Vancouver-Capilano.
    ...
Because of the very special nature of Edgemont - which Robin has very well described - this is the one that's creating the big commotion.
    ...
Before we take a quick break, Robin, how is this not "nimbyism", I suppose? Like, why is not okay to have a liquor store in Edgemont but okay to have one in Deep Cove?

Delaney: Because the community.... It's such an absolutely inappropriate location for it to be.
    ...
Delaney: Well, there is a streetlight there.
    ...
    Delaney: I think it will.
    ...
    I disagree with you, Robin.
    ...
Robin, as a retailer, knows you can't make any money on that; you need volume. They will disappear.
    ...
    The market will decide, Robin.

Delaney: The community has been clear.
    ...
Delaney: At the end of the day the committee doesn't care who dropped the ball, whether it was the district or whether it was the province.
