"It's in our policy to have lock-downs twice a year in the secondary schools," said Jeff Dehler, District 281's community relations program director.
The same day, Dehler said he met with a team that is updating the district's emergency preparedness manual.
"First and foremost, our priority is to make sure the safety of the students and staff is protected," Dehler said."We have plans in place for a huge variety of scenarios."
Tragedies such as the Red Lake incident, Dehler said, make district officials re-examine such policies.
"We want to have everything in place to prevent that kind of thing, but who knows if it could be prevented," Dehler said.
In the event of such a tragic incident, or a fire, gas leak or natural disaster, Dehler said district personnel are instructed to first call 911, then do what they can to keep students safe. The next step is notifying the District 281 administration office as soon as possible.
