As a Kimball police officer, Tom Decker has seen his share of accidents... but now he's at home recovering from one.
"I'm lucky. It could have been a lot worse than it was."
His cruiser was parked along Highway 15 just south of Kimball when a semi hit an SUV and then an ambulance parked on the shoulder behind Decker's squad car.Officer Decker had called paramedics because a man he pulled over for weaving and suspicion of drunk driving complained of chest pains.
"It was a different scene.I could see this metal strewn all over the highway. The semi was in the ditch and the first time I could see the ambulance the back end of the ambulance was smashed in."
Despite being shaken up Decker gave first aid to Kimball Fire Chief Tom Ehlinger and firefighters Mark Dockery and Ron Daniels until they could be taken to the hospital.
...
That's why Officer Decker says it's so important for drivers to slow down whenever they see flashing lights.
"Cause when we have our lights on and people go by, the natural instinct is to look.Got everybody out there looking at us, they aren't watching the road. That's when stuff can happen."
The Kimball Police Chief believes the man Officer Decker pulled over may have been faking those chest pains to get out of a DUI.The man's license had also been revoked.
