The productions apparently will be the final ones directed by Todd Adam Decker, the Bexley City Schools theatre director for the past two years. He resigned at the March 15 Bexley Board of Education meeting after learning that his two-year contract wouldn't be renewed.

Some theatre students and parents were at the March meeting to show support for Decker.

The repertory-theatre style of the two spring plays is unusual for a high school, Decker said.

"It is a lot more difficult to do two shows at the same time, particularly because there are no crossover leads," he said.

The play is directed by Todd Adam Decker, Bexley schools' drama director.
    ...
"One of the reasons I chose this show was because, as Bexley's drama director, I wanted to open my first season with something exciting and fresh," Decker said."Also, the play has an educational component as you learn about French history of that period."

Senior Brock Forsblom, playing the title role, said he likes the excitement that his character's triple identity brings to the story.

This is Forsblom's third time as the lead in Bexley plays. He was the baker in "Into the Woods" in 2001 and last year played the part of J. Pierpont Finch in "How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying."

Forsblom is a BHS choir member, takes private voice lessons and is a member of the Columbus Youth Chorale at Capital University Community Music School.

He plans to attend Yale or Harvard in fall.Whatever university he chooses, he said he plans to be active in drama.

Marguerite is played by senior Halle McGuire.A choir and orchestra member during her four years of high school, McGuire had a part in last year's "How To Succeed."

"I'm really in love with Marguerite's character," she said.

Todd Adam Decker, highly praised by the district's administration when he became the first full-time K-12 theatre-arts director almost two years ago, is resigning his position, effective at the end of this school year.

Approximately 75 drama students and parents were at the Bexley Board of Education meeting Monday night to support Decker after learning the board didn't intend to renew Decker's contract for the next school year.

When asked why Decker wasn't given a new contract, Superintendent Mike Johnson said it was a personnel issue and that there were "some concerns."
    ...
Decker couldn't be reached for comment.
    ...
The overall themes heard from speakers who asked the board to retain Decker included praise for the quality of his productions and the program, his encouragement to his students, his mentoring and teaching abilities and a renewed enthusiasm for theatre arts in the Bexley schools.
    ...
"Mr. Decker has ignited a fire in students," Will Winner said.
    ...
BHS senior Adam Horton told the board, "This is the best year of my life because of Mr. Decker.
    ...
If you take away Mr. Decker, you are taking away the best part of the theatre program."

Decker, who is in his mid-30s, came to Bexley after spending nine years as theatre-arts director at Fort Hayes Arts and Academic High School in Columbus. He had taught and directed for seven summers at Interlocken World Center for Arts Education.

When he accepted the position, the school district had just renovated the Cassingham Theatre in the Cassingham Complex and undertaking a large renovation of the high school auditorium, which is now called "The Jay and Jeanne Schottenstein Theatre."

When Decker arrived, the fine-arts program had just received a $2.1-million influx of private funds from the Bexley Education Foundation.

In addition to teaching theatre to high school students, Decker headed workshops and acting troupes at different grade levels, putting on a number of productions throughout the school year.

Productions included Dracula, The Scarlet Pimpernel, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat and I Never Saw Another Butterfly.

Last summer, Decker took a high school acting troupe to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland to perform the musical, Once On This Island.

The production is directed by Todd Adam Decker, Bexley Theatre Arts Director, who said he chose the pop opera for several reasons: he wanted a large ensemble musical; the story was well known to Bexley; and he felt he could bring a strong, artistic new light to the production.
    ...
"The excitement and dynamics of the new theatre and the theatre program has brought a lot of new talent by students to the surface," Decker said.

With the inauguration of the new Bexley High School Theatre this fall, the drama program -- in its second year under Todd Adam Decker -- will present the musical "Chicago" on Nov. 20-22.

Because this will be the first major production in the new space, Decker wanted a play that would be a real show-stopper for the school and community.

Decker has a busy 2003-04 schedule for the district, opening with an original drama, "A Century of Voices from Ohio," in the Cassingham Theatre.

The production is a collaboration with the Bexley Theatre Department, the Bexley Historical Society and the Ohio Wallpaper Project -- the latter being a touring group of Ohioans with narratives and histories of Ohio for the performance.

Decker said the group will be doing a two-week residency at Bexley schools. The drama will consist of professional actors and students from the high school theatre ensemble troupe.

The play will be performed in the Cassingham Theatre at 1 p.m. Sept. 19 and at 1 and 8 p.m. Sept. 20.

At 7:30 p.m. Oct. 10 and 11 in the Maryland Theatre, the elementary troupe will present "Charlotte's Web," an adaptation of the classic children's story.Decker said the troupe is open to grades 3-5.To expand the elementary program to include younger grades requires hiring another person and cannot be done at this time, partly because of the levy failure in May, Decker said.

The kick-off event in the new high school theatre will take place on Oct. 21 with the Bexley Education Foundation-sponsored "Night of the Arts."

During the evening, student string, choral, instrumental and theatre groups will perform.

About "Chicago," Decker said there are some strong female students in the upcoming program to take part in the production and that the musical is well-suited for developing the program.

He said the announcement that "Chicago" will be performed already has caused great excitement among high school students. Some have been taking voice and dance lessons over the summer to prepare for it, he said.
    ...
Decker said the "The Mouse Trap" is currently the longest-running play in London, England.

Other plans for the drama program include the production of a film, continuation of workshop classes and the possible production of an alumni/community show made up of recent BHS graduates and community members.

Decker said he also hopes a campaign can be started to complete the design of 2003 BHS graduate Lucas Ward's courtyard theatre outside the new arts addition.

Ward designed the theatre as his senior project.

"Luke, though he has graduated, is committed to focusing on the realization of the courtyard theatre," Decker said.

Decker said that with his return from the Scotland festival, he is continuing the positive momentum from last season.

"There is the excitement of the new facilities to start the year and the new classrooms," he said.

Decker's classroom has space with similar dimensions to the size of the high school stage.

"It will provide an excellent rehearsal hall," he said.

The room has a floor that will work well for theatrical movement, he said.
