The site offers "one-stop shopping" according to Dutchess South Director Timothy Decker, with a wide array of liberal arts and business courses, computer classes, and the Emergency Medical Services program.Classes are available for both full-time and part-time students and run daytimes, evenings, and Saturdays in a variety of formats. In addition to classes running the traditional semester of August 26 through December 18, Dutchess South also offers paired courses - for instance, Spanish 101 and Spanish 102 running back to back so a student can complete both in one semester instead of two.Late start courses that begin in mid September and end by Thanksgiving are also available.

Dutchess South can handle registration for any student except first-time, full-time students, who must go through the Admissions office at the main campus.Dutchess South is open for registration, 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to noon on Friday, August 9, and 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on subsequent Fridays, and Saturdays 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. starting on August 24.

The partnership would give mature students "an additional option" to get ahead for college, said Tim Decker, director of Dutchess Community College's South campus.

DCC already offers the program at eight other local high schools: Beacon, Millbrook, Pawling, Red Hook, Rhinebeck, Pine Plains, Our Lady of Lourdes and Dutchess County Board of Cooperative Educational Services.

About 300 students participate each semester, taking courses such as psychology, economics and history.

District teachers get adjunct faculty status and courses are taught the same way they would be at the community college, Decker said.

    Options offered

It's for students who want to accelerate their studies, but don't necessarily want an Advanced Placement course.

A benefit for students is they don't have to commute to the college, Decker said.
