How do you find the right person in the alphabet soup of financial planners? ,More people would almost prefer going to a dentist,s office than going to a financial planner and getting their finances reorganized,, says Tim Decker, president and owner of ISI Financial Group, Inc., in Lancaster (and Dr. Manna would probably agree).
    ...
The mix balances the inevitable ups and downs. ,If you have a diverse portfolio, all declines are temporary, and the advances are permanent,, Decker says.
    ...
Many retirees fear outliving their means, especially as life spans stretch, Decker says, so they endure a silent voice asking if they can afford the restaurant meal or the long vacation.A financial plan can actually ease those worries and reveal possibilities.

Decker recalled one couple in their mid-60s who came to him with the nagging fear that their money wouldn,t last. They wanted enough to live on, travel and contribute to their church.Using very conservative estimates of longest lives and lowest returns, he found that they would achieve their goals and leave an estate as high as $2 million.Their biggest worry, it turned out, was keeping their taxes down.He urged them to take a long-postponed trip.

That kind of financial knowledge is liberating, Decker points out. ,Without setting objectives, you can,t do that,, he says. ,You can,t put a price tag on that.,

Take a notepad along with you wherever you go and write down every bit of money you spend for the next two months, suggests Tim Decker, president and CEO of ISI Financial Group, financial advisors with offices in Lancaster and Camp Hill. This will help you give yourself what Decker calls a financial physical..

We all have perceptions of what we think we are spending, Decker says.If you use this method to create a basic balance sheet - money coming in on one side, money going out on the other - you will probably be surprised. The experience of doing this is a real eye-opener for people..

Decker says when you know where your money is going, you will see easy ways to cut back on expenses and save money. He suggests you determine an amount that you pay yourself each month and put that away in savings - even before you pay your bills.

Most people figure they will put away some amount from what be left after all the bills are paid, Decker says.I advise people to put it away first, make it a priority and do it every month..

    ...
Financial advisor Tim Decker suggest you look at it as simply that and look around for the best deal.

You should shop your insurance coverages around at least once every three years, he says.Consider using the same company for both your car and homeowners insurance for a multi-policy discount.Discuss your situation with a good insurance agent and do not get talked into over-insuring..

Decker says that for most parents with children at home, a good, inexpensive, term-life insurance policy is all that be needed.

    Talk can be cheap.

With deregulation of phone company monopolies, you can choose the right long-distance and local carrier for your family's needs.Pick and pay for only those services you need.If you call almost exclusively within your hometown, basic local calling service may save you as much as $ 200 a year in unneeded services and charges.

    ...
Taxes are the single biggest expense we all have in our lives, says Tim Decker.I strongly encourage families to locate a good tax advisor, not just someone who can fill out tax forms.Find someone who will sit down with you and tell you what you might do differently to minimize your tax burden.

You should think of it as an investment and not an expense, Decker adds.A good tax advisor may be able to help you save money you can put elsewhere..
