    Camp Director - Rodger DeBritz

Rodger DeBritz, our Camp Director, has been involved with outdoor education programs since 1968, when he took his sixth graders to Camp Waskowitz, while teaching in the Highline School District. In 1976 Rodger became the principal at Belfair Elementary and started the fifth grade outdoor program in the North Mason School District over twenty five years ago. Rodger retired from Sand Hill Elementary (North Mason S.D) in 2000 as elementary principal. Rodger loves camp, especially the ropes course. He has been the Director of NRYC since 2001. In addition to being the Director of NRYC, Rodger supervises student teachers for Washington State University. Rodger also works as a boat educator for the Keyport Underwater Museum (he takes kids out on a 38 foot boat and does hands on science), In his spare time he likes to travel with his wife, paint houses, teach handicap students how to ski with "Skiforall", and clown around with the Kiwanis Club of North Mason where he is a "Kiwanis Klown".

Sand Hill Elementary Principal Rodger DeBritz has implemented The Video Journal as an integral part of his staff development program. He believes the videos leave a lasting impression but also encourages his staff to review the tapes frequently. The videos are available in our building for teachers to check out and review the programs or ideas being implemented at Sand Hill, said DeBritz. This constant reminder of pertinent information leads to more effective change and improvement. Many times an education expert will spend three or four hours in a school, but often retaining the abundance of information presented is difficult. A well produced 30-minute video can highlight the key components of a program or idea in an easy to understand format, as well as provide educators the opportunity to review the presentation as many times as is necessary to grasp or understand a concept. It also allows individuals who have missed all or part of a group presentation to review the portion missed at a later time. The Video Journal is a catalyst for further learning as a staff development tool at North Mason High School. The videos help teachers to be aware of the latest educational.
