   From Northern Alsace (yesterday) to the South of the region (tomorrow), Sylvie Debra has worked her way through major economic sectors: the food-processing industry, tourism, biotechnologies, with one main idea in mind : developing. A "developer" she says, happily using the French neologism which, of course, will not fail to hurt many a purist's ear. Indeed, it will not be the first time that this slim and elegant blond aged 44, with her trendy style, somewhat disturbs the quiet and slightly male-dominated Alsatian economy. A working life of eighteen years, not including a year's work experience on the other side of the Rhine in the clothing trade, has brought this former IECS student from Cidou, then a family business in Mietesheim near Niederbronn-les-Bains, to Alsace Biovalley around which the worldwide competitivity centre for therapeutic innovations is now being built. She remembers how three years spent in the fruit juice industry taught her so much in terms of commercial management, having to enter into tight dealings with the largest central distribution agencies. The last eleven years have included her participation in 1995 in the creation of the ADA, the Alsace development agency, the establishment of Alsace Biovalley, which she was heading the following year, and the developments undertaken at the moment - all these activities have represented a formidable alchemy, leading the scientific, industrial and political world to act as pioneers and create what has since become a competitivity centre recognised by a ministerial decision. All this being set in the background of trinational cooperation between Alsace, Baden-Wurttemberg and Switzerland. "The formula was immediately successful", she says, mentioning, on the French side, industrialists Georg Endress and Jean-François Carmier, the president of Alsace, Adrien Zeller, who "believed in it", and Philippe Poindron, who represented the association's scientific guaranty until last year. "Creating Biovalley would have been impossible without the scientific excellence, the industrial fabric and the political will existing in the region, summarises Sylvie Debra, always clear-sighted, willingly remembering that Adrien Zeller once said: "Alsace Biovalley has been one of the boosting powers for the implementation of innovating policies in Alsace".

   The four years spent between 1991 and 1995 as head of the regional committee for tourism mainly remind Sylvie Debra, formerly Sylvie Schott, of the commercial deployment of ancient traditions and promotion operations revolving around the them of "Christmas in Alsace".
