Professor Shelda Debowski was elected President of HERDSA in 2005 following two years on the Executive.Her term of office will conclude July 2009.
Shelda has worked for many years in Western Australian higher education as an academic.After initially lecturing in teacher librarianship at Edith Cowan University, she then segued to human resource management at Murdoch University.Her academic roles included teaching offshore, programme coordination, research leadership roles and extensive consulting to industry in leadership and educational practice.She was recognized for her excellence in teaching in both universities.In 2003 she became Director of Organisational and Staff Development Services at the University of Western Australia.In this role she has variously directed university support for organizational change, teaching and learning, researcher development, leadership development and academic and staff development.
Shelda’s qualifications include a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor and Master of Education and PhD.She is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and a professional member of Australian Human Resource Institute, Australian Library and Information Association and the Australian Psychological Society.She also sits on two University of Western Australia boards and is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management and the Association of Tertiary Education Management.
Her research interests have focused in recent years on three areas: knowledge management, educational leadership and change and higher education academic practice.Shelda has been particularly active in promoting the need for improved support for academic research.She is the leader of the Group of Eight universities Future Research Leaders project in which collaborative resources and strategies are being jointly developed to assist researchers in all eight universities.Her publications have reflected these interests, with the most significant recent publication being Knowledge Management, Wiley Press, 2006.
As President of HERDSA, Shelda aims to encourage ongoing community development across its members and to increase its reach and profile in higher education and tertiary education communities.She has enjoyed the opportunity to meet many members of HERDSA at conferences and meetings and to represent its interests in other forums.The international ICED Council meetings, which are held annually, have been particularly fruitful opportunities to benchmark HERDSA’s outcomes against comparable societies, and to explore how HERDSA might play a larger role in the world arena.Shelda is also keen to further expand HERDSA’s role in sharing good educational practice across its members.
