I had the pleasure on Thursday to speak with Betty Debnam , the creator and editor of The Mini Page.

Ms. Debnam , who grew up in Raleigh , started The Mini Page in 1969.Today it is published in 500 papers with millions of readers across the country.

Ms. Debnam , who insisted that I call her Betty in our phone conversation , is 72 years old.She grew up in a newspaper family. Her grandparents published the Snow Hill Standard Laconic in Greene County. Her father was a radio and television reporter.

Ms. Debnam taught in elementary school for 10 years before launching The Mini Page.Today , 32 years later , she's still at it.She has a staff of three and no longer does all of the writing and drawing herself , as she did in the beginning. But The Mini Page is still her baby , make no mistake. She's involved in the planning and researching and writing and editing. She still gets a thrill out of working on deadline and having a completed product in hand , week after week.

This week , in our paper , we are publishing Volume 1618 of The Mini Page.

Ms. Debnam has spoken to a lot of school classes over the years.

She remembers walking down the hall in one school when she met a student who asked her , ‘‘‘Are you the Mini Page lady.I love The Mini Page.'.

‘‘There wasn't a teacher there standing there , telling her to say that , '' she recalled.‘‘I can think of that and get a little weepy.''.

It's a thrill , she says , to walk in a classroom and see The Mini Page displayed on the wall.

Once , when she was speaking to a school group , a student raised his hand and said he had been saving copies of The Mini Page for years.‘‘He wanted to know if they would have more value after I had passed on , '' Ms. Debnam said.‘‘I thought that was funny.''.

She has no plans to quit.

‘‘I really enjoy it.I enjoy being the Mini Page editor , '' she said.‘‘It's fun for me to be able to pick up the telephone and call almost anywhere in the United States and reach a source and they have heard of The Mini Page and grew up on The Mini Page.''.

    Hooked on reading

The Mini Page is a way for newspapers to attract younger readers. Some children start by reading the comics.
    ...
Ms. Debnam responded by saying that was just the way it was , but maybe someday that could change.

    ...
In The Mini Page , meanwhile , Ms. Debnam has decided to steer clear of the terrorism topic for now : Let parents decide how to discuss the news with their children , she says , and if there is a proper time when things can be put in perspective in The Mini Page , then she will include it in one of her weekly lesson plans for her readers.

I hope you're ready for Tuesday's elections after all of the coverage we have had during the past couple of weeks. We have also published a lot of letters , usually a good sign of spirited campaigning going on.Wednesday's Observer will have a full report from Fayetteville and other municipalities in Cumberland and our regional counties.
