   Speaking at the annual Faculty of Medicine Awards Ceremony, Professor Haile Debas from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) called for medical schools and their teaching hospitals to adopt a wide range of strategies to sustain teaching excellence.
   
   Professor Debas was the guest speaker at the ceremony, held on 27th October 2005, and said, "Remarkable advances in science and technology, and changing social and patient expectations demand change, and at the heart of this change is a multidisciplinary approach to science and patient care services. As these necessary changes play out, teaching - the core mission of the medical school - must be protected, appreciated and rewarded."
   
   Professor Debas went on to discuss the transformation that is taking place in how research is done and how patients are served. He also described the USA's Academy of Medical Educators movement, which aims to enhance the status of teachers of medical students, promote and reward teaching excellence, foster curricular innovation, and encourage scholarship in medical education.
   
   Professor Debas, who is Executive Director of UCSF Global Health Sciences, received an honorary science doctorate from Imperial College in 2005. He is one of the world's leading experts in epidemiology and public health. A specialist in gastrointestinal physiology, gastrointestinal peptides and brain-gut interactions, he has a highly distinguished career combining academic surgery and academic management. Professor Debas is also the Maurice Galante Distinguished Professor of Surgery, Chancellor and Dean Emeritus at UCSF.

   Haile T. Debas Haile T. Debas, MD, a native of Eritrea, is executive director of UCSF Global Health Sciences, the Maurice Galante Distinguished Professor of Surgery, dean emeritus of the School of Medicine, vice chancellor emeritus for medical affairs, and chancellor emeritus at University of California, San Francisco. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a member of the Institute of Medicine, and the Committee on Science, Engineering, and Public Policy. He was the 2001-2002 president of the American Surgical Association and was 2002-2003 chair of the Council of Deans of the Association of American Medical Colleges. He is a member of the United Nations Commission on HIV/AIDS and Governance in Africa. He received his BA from University of Addis Ababa and his MD from McGill University.
