   Steve Deavours will coach in another Northside-Berry basketball game tonight at 7:30.
   
   However, he will be watching it from an unfamiliar spot. Unlike the previous 32 seasons as coach of the Northside Rams, Deavours is sitting on the Wildcats' bench this season.
   
   "I just enjoy coaching," he said. "It wouldn't matter where I was at."
   
   Some thought he had coached his final game last spring when he left Northside because of health problems.
   
   He was thrust back into coaching the week before the football season began in late-August when Berry football coach Russell Bagwell resigned.

   Deavours, a Berry graduate, agreed to step in, as long as he didn't have to teach all day, too.
   
   The move came as a shock to many, including his successor, Lance Green.

   Now, as the Wildcats' basketball coach, Deavours is trying to mold a young Berry team into winners.
   
   It's been a tough task so far, but he sees progress being made.
   
   "These are good kids," he said. "They're trying to get better. That's all you can ask."

   "We don't even have enough for a B-team here," Deavours said.
   
   The Wildcats won three straight games earlier this season, but are in Class 1A, Area 6 with powers Carrollton and Akron.
   
   "I told them yesterday that some of these folks in the stands may give up on you, but I'll never give up on you, even if we just have one game left," Deavours said.

   Deavours is filling an opening created last Monday when Berry head football coach Russell Bagwell suddenly resigned.

   He [ Rogers ] didn't have any help , so I was asked if I'd help , Deavours said.
   
   Berry principal Bob McCool is happy to have Deavours on the Wildcats' sideline.

   In addition to being an assistant football coach , Deavours will be the boys' head basketball coach , pending the Fayette County Board of Education's approval.
   
   During his tenure of 32 years on the hardwood at Northside , Deavours compiled a 465-340 record. He is excited about the chance to get back into coaching.
   
   I'm going to have a good time with kids any time I'm coaching them , Deavours said.
   
   Deavours had retired this past spring due to health reasons. In the spring of 2000 he suffered a heart attack and has had recurring hip problems.
   
   Because of that , the toll of teaching all day and then coaching practices or games forced Deavours to retire.
   
   At Berry , however , his only responsibility will be coaching.
   
   I didn't think it was good for me to work the whole day , Deavours said. Now , if I want to , I can rest the whole day , then go to practice..
   
   In a stroke of irony , Deavours' coaching career had seemingly come to an end last basketball season when Deavours guided Northside to a 59-47 win over Berry.

   That will be a strange feeling , I'm sure , Deavours said.
   
   Deavours doesn't anticipate any ill will from the Northside faithful for him switching alliances to Berry.

   I gave 32 years of my life to Northside High School and I love Northside High School , Deavours said.
   
   As for now , Deavours is busily trying to learn all his new players' names and get the Berry defense ready for a tough matchup Friday night against Thorsby.
   
   We're going to work hard and try to give them an opportunity to win , Deavours said.

   Former Northside coach Steve Deavours returned to watch the final varsity game in the gym, which was built in 1958.
   
   "I was trying to think how many hours I've spent in this place in 33 years," said Deavours, who coached basketball and football at the school.
   
   "I spent just about all my working life here. I raised my family here.
   
   "There's no doubt it's sad in a way, but for these kids it's going to be great. They've been needing a new facility for a long time. I'm excited for the kids, and I think the new facility will help the program.
