   Phil DeAugustino, a guidance counselor at Flagler Palm Coast High who helped come up with the plan, said high school graduations would probably still have student speakers, but administrators might choose from a pool of students who want to speak, rather than obligating the valedictorian and salutatorian to address their class.

   DeAugustino said this past year a boy who was close to becoming valedictorian or salutatorian lost the chance because he decided to take journalism, another low-weighted elective. With the new system, DeAugustino said Flagler students might focus more on taking classes they are interested in, rather than those needed to boost their rank.
   
   "We want kids to get an education by taking classes they really want to take," he said.
