"If some other countries or areas might be impacted, that's a possibility, but it's really hard to say," said Janelle Deatsman, spokeswoman for Maple Leaf Farms in Milford.
    ...
The poultry destroyed hasn't increased Maple Leaf's sales noticeably, Deatsman said, because the company doesn't compete in export markets with producers from those countries, and "the countries that have been affected are not countries we normally export to."

The health and quality of its white Pekin duckling supply is a selling point for Maple Leaf products, and the company has had stringent measures in place for years to protect it, she said.
    ...
People aren't allowed near the ducks if they have been at any other poultry farms or at any swine operation within 72 hours, Deatsman said.

And if they don't work with the ducks on a daily basis, individuals are required to don disposable coveralls, hair nets and boots before visiting them, to minimize the possibility of spreading germs, she said. Boot soles are dipped in a disinfectant solution before entering the duck area.

"We work with licensed veterinarians and have staff members who go out and visit with our contract producers on a regular basis to check on the health of the ducks and make sure they're following the biosecurity rules," Deatsman said.
