CU president Dr. Michael V. Carter announced Friday that Jim Deaton has been named head football coach.

Deaton, who was director of athletics at CU in 2000, has been assistant football coach at Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, Tenn. for 24 seasons. He was part of five NAIA National Championships during this time before the school moved to NCAA Division II.
Deaton played on Carson-Newman's 1972 Eagle team that competed in the NAIA championship and during his coaching career with the Eagles has coached 21 combined NAIA and NCAA playoff teams.
"We are so pleased that Jim Deaton has accepted this position," Carter said.

While at Carson-Newman, Deaton has served as defensive coordinator and has produced 51 All-Conference and 14 All-American players.
