Don Deaton

Don Deaton begins his second year as an assistant coach with the Briarcrest basketball program. Coach Deaton's arrival last year was a big key in the Saints winning their first state championship. Prior to coming to Briarcrest, Coach Deaton served as the head coach at Bartlett High School( 2 years) and at Munford High School (4years). Coach Deaton also brings college coaching experience to the Briarcrest staff due to his tenure at Delta State University. Coach Deaton has a Masters Degree in Physical Education from Delta State University as well as a Masters in Special Education from UT Martin. While the names in the line-up might have changed in the past three seasons and Smith's departure has been filled by assistant coach Don Deaton, who led the Panthers to a regular-season district title and the Shelby County Championship in his first season, no one can take a state championship away.

"(Coach Don Deaton) always told us to keep our heads up.We stuck with him and he stuck with us."

Former Munford coach Don Deaton has taken over for Smith on an interim basis.

Deaton said Bartlett's players were surprised by Smith's announcement.

"I don't know if shocked is the word," Deaton said, "but it was a little shock, I believe."

Deaton will coach the Panthers through this season on an interim basis.The job will then likely be opened to outside applicants, of which Deaton said he would certainly be one.

"I'm excited," said Deaton, 40, who led Munford to a 34-59 record in three seasons as head coach.
