LONGMEADOW - Mike Deary was Longmeadow High School's second athletic director, second football coach and second baseball coach.
While serving as athletic director for the last 20 years, Deary has been second to none.
Deary, a straight talker who represented not just his school but the entire region by serving on countless local and state committees, will retire from his athletic director and teaching positions at Longmeadow at the end of June.
>
"One of my comments is that I woke up every morning and I didn't have to go to work," said Deary, 57.
...
Deary said he served on so many committees because, "I have a hard time saying no, or if I have an issue or concern I try to find a resolution."
"Mike Deary has been a terrific advocate for high school athletes in Western Massachusetts, and a key figure in the governance of interscholastic sports in the commonwealth," 16-year Minnechaug Regional athletic director Ned Doyle said.
...
Deary was also a high school and college basketball official since the 1970s before retiring this season due to hip surgery.
All the while, Deary taught classes and served as the high school's Department Head for Health and Physical Education. He's taught at the high school for 35 years.
...
After injuring his knee playing football at Springfield College in his junior season, Deary was hired as a defensive coach at Longmeadow his senior year.He was hired the following year, in 1973, as a physical education teacher.
Deary was the school's head football coach from 1975-89, compiling a 105-29-1 record. His Lancers lost in the 1984 championships, but led the team to its first Super Bowl title in 1985.He also coached baseball from 1979-86, winning 70 percent of his games.
A retirement party has been scheduled, but Deary hasn't had too much time to think about retiring.
"People are asking me if I'm counting days, but I'm not," he said.
