Eben DeArmond Sr.
Eben Alexander DeArmond Sr., 83, a native and resident of Cleveland, passed away Sunday evening, Jan. 18, 2004, in a Chattanooga hospital.
He was a graduate of Bradley Central High School.
He was a retired Major in the U.S. Army Infantry, serving in France during World War II.He enlisted at age 17 and had a distinguished career spanning more than a decade.Following a career ending injury on the third day of The Normandy invasion, he was awarded The Purple Heart, The Combat Cross and The Bronze Star for Valor.He retired from military service in 1947.
He took great pride in his military service and would gladly tell his stories of the gallant and colorful men and women that served with him.
He returned to Chattanooga after a lengthy stay in various military hospitals.While in Chattanooga, he attended and graduated from UT-Chattanooga with a degree in accounting.
He was a charter member of the UT-Chattanooga Kappa Sigma Fraternity.He later received his CPA.He worked for the CPA firm of Hazlett, Lewis, and Beater and later served as the Hamilton County Auditor until 1967 when he moved his family back to Cleveland to begin his CPA firm.
He was a 32nd Degree Mason, Cleveland Lodge No.134 and member of the Chattanooga Alhambra Shrine Temple, The American Legion Post 81, the American Legion Society of 40/8 ,and VFW Post 2598 of Cleveland.He was a past member of the Cleveland Kiwanis Club, and served on the Board of the Cleveland Boys, Club.
He was a voracious reader with a keen interest in military history and the history of Cleveland.
He was a member of Broad Street United Methodist Church.
