   Beth Dearinger, a clerk at the YARN BARN, 930 Massachusetts in Lawrence, said the store sells 40 to 50 kinds of novelty yarns, many of which are textured or multicolored.
   
   "One yarn looks sort of like a feather boa when you hold it," she said.

   "Using fancy yarns, you can get a neat effect just using the knit stitch," Dearinger said.
   
   A YARN BARN employee for six years, she says interest in knitting has surged in recent years -- led by some of Hollywood's hippest. Dearinger said she thinks the terrorist events of Sept. 11 led a lot of people into knitting since it was something they could do at home to relax or while watching television.
   
   And, like Pace, many of those taking up knitting are young.
   
   "There seems to be a huge trend of knitting at the college campuses," Dearinger said.

   One 11-year-old boy, for example, comes to the YARN BARN frequently and enjoys knitting, Dearinger said, but he doesn't want any of his friends to know.
