Charlie Dearin, president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Explorationists, said every prospector tries to make the best royalty deal they can with the larger companies that fund the mineral hunt.
"If you do a good deal, you have this incentive to find something. Without that carrot guys will leave."
He said the royalty tax makes it harder to do good deals because it's an added expense prospectors may not be able to pass on to their backers. And if they can, it will only increase costs throughout the provincial exploration industry.
