   Our Divisional Administrator, Rodney Deane (pictured right), will be leaving the Division to take up his new seconded post as Senior Site Manager at Little France on 1 September 2001 - a bit earlier than expected. He is currently convenor of the moving sub-group responsible for organising the move of University Departments within the Royal Infirmary to the new site.
   
   We wish Rodney well in his new location, but in the meantime, here is a look at his life and career so far.
   
   Background:
   
   Born in London in 1942 during a particularly difficult time for Londoners and the country as a whole, Rodney has absolutely no recollection of the war years. He does, however, remember the story of how his father's contribution to the war effort as a fire warden was seriously disrupted when a V1 bomb (or was it a V2?) landed at the bottom of the road and he was ceremoniously blown off the toilet! Stories Rodney often told his children of his having a bullet-proof pram, tin helmet, gas mask and fireproof nappies were, of course, greatly exaggerated!
   
   On leaving school in 1960 Rodney was offered not one, but two jobs as a junior technician at the National Institute for Medical Research in Mill Hill, London. How things have changed! One of the jobs was in the Department of Biological Standards and the other was in the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology - there is nothing new about interdisciplinary. He chose to take the job with Physiology and Pharmacology following a bizarre interview in Biological Standards, and it was that monumental decision that set the course of his whole career.
   
   At the tender and inexperienced age of 24, Rodney was appointed Chief Technician in the Department of Pharmacology at the School of Pharmacy, University of London. Some years later he went ot work for Roche Products in their pharmaceutical division and then their bio-electronic division. In August 1973, now married with one son, he moved to Edinburgh to take up the position of Departmental Superintendent in the Department of Pharmacology at 1 George Square.
   
   Rodney and his wife Gail, who teaches physical education at St Margaret's School, have three children - Richard, who is now 28, and Katie and Frazer, their 26 year-old twins.

   This has proved to be very perceptive as Rodney enjoys painting both in oils and water-colour - even to the extent of exhibiting in the Talbot Rice Gallery a large oil painting of Edinburgh as seen from Appleton Tower!
   
   He has also become adept at making items of furniture, although admits to never having had the courage to tackle a large piece in expensive wood such as mahogany or oak!
   
   Over the years he has discovered the joys of house plumbing and electrics whilst also taking pleasure in cooking and trying to keep fit by circuit training and weights.
   
   Claim to fame:
   
   While Project Manager for Fujisawa, Rodney helped with the overall design process of Level 6 in Appleton Tower.
