Donn A. Deane , the owner of Brothers Pizza , said the store closed at 11 p.m. Friday and he was working at Orange House of Pizza , which he also owns , when police called to tell him the garage in Athol was in flames , he said. When Mr. Deane arrived at the scene , the garage was the only building that was visibly on fire , although smoke was coming from the other building , he said. At one point , it looked as if firefighters had the fire under control but then it flared up again , he said. The firefighters did a great job , but the age of the building was fighting against them , Mr. Deane said. He estimated that the building was more than 70 years old , but neither Mr. Deane nor Deputy Chief Chauvette could provide a more accurate age for the building. The fire spread so quickly because all the wood in the building was very dry because the building was so old , he said. Louis Giannakakos of Athol owned the building , Mr. Deane said.

Mr. Deane bought the Brothers Pizza business in October 2000 , but it had been at that address for a number of years , he said. Ten part-time employees worked there , he said. Motorists slowed to gawk and pedestrians stopped at the scene yesterday morning as smoke filtered through the air and water sprayed. Another landmark gone , one man said as he walked away.
