Donald Deane, compensation manager for the city of Boulder, said he liked the idea of giving consumers more responsibility for choosing their caregivers and increasing their awareness of cost and quality. But he said he was concerned about whether employees could decipher all the information and make an informed decision.
PatientChoice started working with physicians in Denver and Boulder about a year ago, laying the groundwork for its product.
The doctors, most of whom already belong to small, geographically-defined contracting groups called independent physician associations, were asked to choose a primary hospital and a select group of specialist that they like to refer patients to.
PatientChoice defines these provider alliances as "care systems." The care systems, basically doctors and hospitals, then bid on the PatientChoice contract, deciding on their own how much they'd like to charge PatientChoice members.
