23 JOHN DEAN PARK ROAD
John Dean came to Eastern Canada as a young man where he lived for many years. When he moved to B.C.'s interior, he was involved in mining, general contracting and real estate. He finally relocated permanently in Victoria but owned property on Mount Newton. He became keenly interested in Victoria's civic affairs which he criticized strongly. His primary concerns were the welfare of children and the aged and his private benefactions reflect this. The epitaph on his tombstone, which he set up 12 years before his death, reads, "it is a rotten world, artful politicians are it's bane, it's saving grace is the artlessness of the young and the wonders of the sky".
