Jane Dean makes her home in Kent, UK. She is a well-known scrapbook designer who has had her work featured in countless publications. Currently, she works exclusively for Future Publications on their ScrapBook Inspirations and Papercrafts Inspirations magazines. Jane is a designer for ScrapGenie, and Ellison Design. She recently joined The Design Collective's team of designers.

Here are the questions we posed to Jane along with her answers:

{ScrapScene} I noticed that you've been scrapbooking since 1999. What got you started?

{Jane Dean} I have always loved photography and wanted to do more with my photographs, I wanted to decorate a photograph album and looked for ideas on the internet. I found scrapbooking and sold my beanie baby collection for quite a lot of money to buy tickets to fly to South Carolina to meet with an internet friend. She took me scrapbook shopping for the weekend and I flew back to the UK with enough supplies to start me off.

{ScrapScene} Can you give any suggestions for other artists on developing a unique personal style?

JaneDean60s child {Jane Dean} I think that you have to decide what you like best and what pleases you most instead of trying to be somebody you're not. Work out what your favourite techniques are and develop them to create a style personal to you.

{ScrapScene} Do you see any differences in the styles of European scrappers as compared to North American or other parts of the world?

{Jane Dean} One of the big differences seems to be subject matter, cultures are so different that they are bound to dictate what we record in our albums. I think we have less emphasis on religion and heritage, we are also less patriotic, I am always jealous of 4th July pages and would love a British day to celebrate every year. The internet is such a huge resource of ideas that it ensures we all pick up on new trends fairly quickly.

{ScrapScene} What inspires and motivates you to create if you get a creative block?

{Jane Dean} You will probably hate me for this but I don't suffer from block!
    ...
{Jane Dean} I have always loved a collage style and busy pages, I love putting as much on a page as I can and I don't like white space. I recently started to use paper piecing again to make page accents, I used to make a lot a few years ago and decided to try and revive its popularity but this time round I want to include other media such as fabric and beads.

{ScrapScene} What are your favorite products?

{Jane Dean} It will always be patterned paper, I love it and have to buy whole collections, I love mixing colours and patterns, I sometimes spend hours choosing the right papers for a layout.
    ...
{Jane Dean} My 12" trimmer, sharp scissors and a black pen. Oh, and a note pad with squared paper for my scribbles.

{ScrapScene} What do you think is the hottest trend in scrapbooking? What do you predict for future trends?

{Jane Dean} I really wouldn't know, I am always months behind finding out anything new, I just bimble along and do my ‘thang'. I think digital scrapping will make more of an impact, maybe more hybrid layouts with digital elements printed out to use as page accents.

{ScrapScene} Do you have any tips for other scrapbookers on getting their work noticed?

{Jane Dean} Stay true to yourself and don't try to change your style to what you think they are looking for, if you enjoy what you create and it excites you that will show in your work.
    ...
{Jane Dean} At the moment I am designing some classes to teach in Ireland next month, working on magazine assignments for Scrapbook Inspirations and some classes for Design Collective.
