   All of my chats are with those who stand on the front line, the authors.This week, we're switching gears and bringing you the one who stand behind the authors-the editor.Carla Dean is the founder and editor of U Can Mark My Words Editorial Services and the most sought after editor in the industry.She's been my editor since 2003 and with each novel; her talent and skills grow tremendously.
   
   I asked Carla to talk to me about her experiences as an editor, as well as her thoughts of the industry, and here what she had to say.

   CARLA: My love for literature came at a very early age.

   CARLA: U Can Mark My Word was birthed after receiving a response to a message I had posted to an online message board, which actually was regarding how I could go about becoming a reviewer.

   CARLA: My biggest fear was that no one would believe I was capable of providing a service in which I had not obtained a degree.

   CARLA: Take the time and do your research when writing a novel.

   CARLA: I certainly hope so.

   CARLA: I guess I would have to compare the feeling I experience to the same feeling a director experiences when his/her movie receives an Oscar Award ... has been recognized and received the exposure he/she deserved. (*Wink*)

   JESSICA: What is a typical day for Carla Dean, editor extraordinaire?

   CARLA: Once I pull myself from the bed, I normally check my email before taking my daughter to school, and sometimes even before going to the bathroom. (I know what you're thinking. ‘Before going to relieve herself?' What can I say?

   CARLA: Being able to do something you love and making an impact in the lives of others in the process.
   ...
   CARLA: I wouldn't single out black women in general, but would say one obstacle ALL black authors, male and female, face is not having reputable publishing companies to submit to who will pay them what they are truly worth for all the hard work, time, blood, sweat, and tears they pour into their novels.

   CARLA: Work of self-published authors is often compared to those of mainstream authors, such as Zane, Eric Jerome Dickey, or Terry McMillan.

   CARLA: Not really.
   ...
   CARLA: Most work I've seen is up to the industry standards, but then I have run across others who are just writing in order to see their name on the cover and with hopes of making a few dollars in the process.Those who are serious about their work are willing to do whatever is necessary to bring their work up to par and meet the industry's standards.
