"The primary goal of the annual adolescent initiative is to ensure that plan members who are children ages 11 to 13 receive all age-appropriate recommended immunizations," says Bernadette Dean, RN, BS, and Senior Health Management Programs Coordinator at IBC.
Increasing the rate at which adolescents make preventative doctors' visits and obtain health information from IBC's Generation Y, a.k.a. "Gen-Y," website are, according to Dean, "additional program goals that consequently heighten the immunization status of children in this age group." -

In an effort to encourage adolescents to visit their primary care physicians and to keep up-to-date with recommended vaccinations, IBC has created unique ways to inspire families to reach their health goals. "Here at Independence Blue Cross, we continually monitor national recommendations for vaccinations and preventive care, and strive to meet or exceed these standards through innovative programs such as this one for adolescents," says IBC's I. Steven Udvarhelyi, MD, Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer.
As part of the program, IBC has mailed over 100,000 immunization reminders to parents and teens. The reminders include links to IBC's online Gen-Y Health Club, where visitors can find helpful information on common teen concerns like exercise, nutrition, alcohol, tobacco, drugs and sexually transmitted diseases. -
