St. Paul, Minn., Dec. 11, 2008 - Mary DeLuney, an associate educator with the Minneapolis Public Schools, has been chosen as Education Minnesota's Educational Support Professional of the Year.
The statewide union initiated the ESP of the Year award in 2008 to recognize the important work ESPs do every day on behalf other educators and students.
In addition to state recognition, DeLuney will be Minnesota's candidate for the National Education Association ESP of the Year in 2009.
DeLuney, a member of the Minneapolis Federation of Teachers and Education Support Professionals, is the first recipient of the honor.
She trains and mentors 1,500 paraprofessionals through professional development workshops and peer reviews.
She is the ESP member on the Minneapolis School District Staff Development Advisory Committee.
"Mary has a unique gift for building relationships in the district in her local union that ultimately benefits her ESP peers," Linnea Hacket, ESP president of MFT local 59, wrote in her nomination letter for DeLuney.
