BRISTOL, Conn. - Council Rock Northampton Little League manager Al DeLuca gave his players a full day off on Thursday, saying their 12-year-old bodies needed a break from the heat and the daily Mid-Atlantic Region tournament grind.
    ...
"We were raring to play," DeLuca said.
    ...
"It's going to be a long day," DeLuca said.

Although Northampton did not face Randolph East in pool play, DeLuca thinks his team will be prepared for whatever the New Jersey boys have to offer.
    ...
"The coaches have watched enough baseball games with the kids from New Jersey that we have a good feel for what they do - as they do us," DeLuca said."We've been here for a week.
    ...
DeLuca thinks Northampton's strongest assets are its determination and depth.
    ...
DeLuca and his coaches, Jeff Cochran and George Kotsopoulos, count on all 13 to produce when needed.
    ...
"Every night, you'll get two or three different kids who will contribute to the win to a large extent, and then the other nine guys are going to support them, and that's the way it's been, it's been a team effort," DeLuca said.
    ...
"We played our worst baseball of the tournament [against Maine-Endwell,] but we've made some corrections and adjustments, and now we think we have a better idea of what we're up against," DeLuca said, then added, "We don't want to even think about [a rematch] because right now, all we're thinking about is New Jersey."

"There was a completely different dynamic to this ballgame," Northampton manager Al DeLuca said.

"We hadn't been beaten like that in a long time, and it was important for us to somehow win a game - even if it wasn't necessarily a well-played ballgame, it was just a long, grind-it-out kind of baseball game," said manager Al DeLuca, whose team had not been shut out in District 30, Section 6 or Pennsylvania state competition.

"We were not happy about losing [Tuesday,] so the whole seeding and the playoffs didn't matter to us, really," DeLuca said.
    ...
"These guys have been playing baseball for a long time, and I've known all of them since they were five or six years old, and nobody wants it to end," Al DeLuca said."Not yet."

"We could tell when the kids were out taking infield practice this morning they were not going to lose today," CR-Northampton coach Al DeLuca said.
    ...
DeLuca said the players just needed to be more aggressive. He had a tougher time teaching patience at the plate, but his kids got the message.

"Between innings," DeLuca said, "we're just telling them to ‘keep your hands back and be disciplined.
    ...
"He's an outstanding baseball player," DeLuca said."He's been our No. 1 all year long, not only by pitching well, not only by playing great defense, but also hitting the ball. He's great."
    ...
DeLuca was responsible for the team's only mistakes. He sent two runners to steal home, and both were caught.

"The coach has to be smart and not send the kid from third," DeLuca said jokingly.

"He hit a first pitch curve ball," Northampton coach Al DeLuca said.
    ...
"We're going to take a different strategy against him tomorrow," DeLuca said.

This time Northampton didn't battle back.It loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth, but State College made a pitching change. It worked.Northampton stranded all three runners - the team stranded 13 in the game.

"You can't win a game like that," DeLuca said, "especially against this team. This was a very good team."

But redemption time comes soon for Northampton. With the game at 1 p.m. today, Northampton must correct its mistakes soon if it wants to beat State College and advance to the regionals.DeLuca knows his team will be ready.

"I think it helps us," he said.

Northampton manager Al DeLuca wasn't surprised by Miller's performance.
    ...
The other difference-maker in Tuesday's game, DeLuca said, was that his hitters were more disciplined than they had been in the first game, when they stranded 13 base runners en route to an 8-5 loss.

"Against a well-coached, disciplined team that doesn't make a lot of errors," he said, "that is not winning baseball."
